Vitamin D has many roles in the body. This nutrient is needed for bone growth and maintenance.* Strong evidence suggests that it supports calcium absorption, modulates cell growth and supports neuromuscular and immune system function.*
Studies have revealed that insufficient vitamin D levels are widespread, prompting recent adjustments to the daily recommended intake. In 2008, the American Academy of Pediatrics increased the daily intake of vitamin D for infants and youths from 200 to 400 IU. The Institute of Medicine subsequently raised daily allowances for those aged 1-70 to 600 IUs in 2010, 800 IUs for those over 70, and 600 IUs for pregnant and breastfeeding women.
Few foods are naturally rich in vitamin D, making sunshine an ideal source of the nutrient. However, sunscreen can block some of the absorbed vitamin D. Likewise, people in cloudy or rainy climates tend to have lower levels of the nutrient. Cod liver oil may also be a viable source.
Vitamin D levels fluctuate in the body due to many factors. Laboratory tests can be done to establish a baseline level that physicians may use to suggest adequate supplementation.
