Active antioxidant form of CoQ10; support for energy metabolism and cardiovascular health*
Ubiquinol is the active antioxidant form of CoQ10, containing two hydrogen atoms more than ubiquinone. Along with ubiquinone, it makes up the majority of the CoQ10 in a healthy individual's blood. Ubiquinol may be particularly vital for those with increased oxidative or physical stress, or those who don't seem to respond to everyday CoQ10 consumption, which could be due to poor conversion of CoQ10 to ubiquinol in the body. Studies suggest that ubiquinol may be easier to absorb than ubiquinone.
In a study of healthy subjects, supplementation with 200 mg of ubiquinol for 4 weeks increased plasma total CoQ10 from 0.9 to 4.3 μg/mL (P < 0.001), compared to 0.9 to 2.5 μg/mL with ubiquinone. Moreover, ubiquinol sustained a healthy ratio of CoQ10 to lipids. Research also indicates that it promotes antioxidant status, healthy ejection fraction, mitral valve function, physical activity, and quality of life. The bioavailability and safety of ubiquinol were tested in single- and multiple-dose studies, showing significant gastrointestinal absorption and no notable side effects.*
