L-Glutamine is the most plentiful free amino acid in the body, occurring in greater concentrations than other proteins in important areas such as the brain, small intestine cells, immune cells, and skeletal and smooth muscle. The concentration of free glutamine in muscle appears to determine if tissue is broken down (catabolism) or built up (anabolism). That's because cortisol binds to its receptor and activates an enzyme called glutamine synthetase, causing muscle tissue to be broken down and releasing glutamine. This reduces muscle mass. High blood levels of glutamine deactivate glutamine synthetase, stopping the breaking down of muscle.
