Support for healthy fetal neural development*
Folic Acid is indispensable for folate-dependent processes, including proper fetal neural development, the maturation of red and white blood cells, the fabrication of nucleic acids, the conversion of homocysteine to methionine, and the synthesis of gastric hydrochloric acid.*
Adequate folate intake in a healthful diet may reduce a female's risk of having a child with certain neural tube defects.
Approximately 1,333 mcg DFE (800 mcg) of folic acid in dietary supplementation has been proven to be more beneficial than the lower amounts typically found in regular food, in terms of reducing the risk of neural tube defects. However, the FDA does not officially endorse this claim. Public health experts advise women to consume 667 mcg DFE (400 mcg) of folic acid each day, from either fortified foods, dietary supplements, or a combination of the two.
