Berberis Formula combines barberry, goldenseal and Oregon grape extracts, traditionally used to support a healthy gut. The primary active agent in these extracts is berberine, which recent studies demonstrate can inhibit attachment of harmful bacteria to the stomach mucosa. Berberine also facilitates ion and water transportation across intestinal cells, and helps maintain the balance of electrolytes and fluids. Additionally, the substance increases the expression of the Na+; H+ exchanger, aquaporin, and tight junctions; Promoting absorbability of sodium and water, and proper intestinal permeability. Lastly, berberine encourages intestinal motility during reduced activity through activation of muscarinic receptors.
